Introducing Ryan, the art room security guard

We initially started decorating the art room door to make it more festive for winter. 

As always, we went a little crazy. 

Students created a cute landscape with glitter snowflakes falling on a snowy ground. 

Now we have Ryan, the crazed, rabid polar bear. 

He is now the new Art Room security guard of sorts. 

Big thanks to my students for always embracing my ideas, and pushing them even further!

I can't wait to see how this creation ends up.

Ryan is now official with his name plate!

The wheel recreates The Great Wave

6th grade wheel students in second period/wheel 5 created a large scale recreation The Great Wave by Hokusai. 

The original is a woodblock print created in the mid 1800's.

Here is the original piece of artwork:

The image was enlarged by using a grid system. 

Each student drew at least 1 section of the whole image. 

The painting was done by small groups throughout their three weeks in art.

The arrival of Señor Pecs

Señor Pecs is finally complete. 

This was a mythical creature sculpture that had to be put on hold. 

This team did a fantastic job!

Linoleum Block Prints

7th and 8th graders recently started their block printing projects. 

Each student chose a word that best represents them. 

Then, they created a design based on that word. 

That design was then carved on a block of linoleum. 

After carving was complete, students created prints of their designs .

It's all about precision in 1st period. :)

Shelter Night Art Auction

Tomorrow, December 7th, is Walker's annual shelter night. 

This event is meant to educate students and families about animal shelters in the bay area, and bring awareness to the struggles these facilities face. 

My 7th and 8th grade Art Appreciation students created pieces of artwork to auction off during the event. All proceeds will be going to shelters throughout Tampa Bay. My students spent the past couple of weeks producing work for the auction. I am extremely proud of the work they produced.  

We have about 50 pieces to auction off. Prices range from $5-$10.

Students did a wonderful job. 

They were able to raise over $200. 

We still have more work available if anyone missed Shelter Night and would like to donate.

2011 Re-purposed Illuminations Sculpture Competition

I am so proud of my students who participated in this art contest. It was a big undertaking, especially for a single student per project. These guys really stepped up to the challenge and gave it their all.

 My 7th grade participant chose "A Long Walk to Water" as his inspiration.

My 8th grade participant create a piece titled "Experiencing Light". Here is his artist's statement: "Light allows people to have a variety of experiences. In my sculpture, I wanted to place those experiences inside the globe."
